In conjunction with the exhibition Women in Mythology: the Power of the Feminine in Ancient Tales currently on view in the Parthenon’s East Gallery, classicist Anne Christeson will be the first Symposia Series speaker of the 2010 -11 season.

McCampbell has chosen to illustrate moments in well-known Greek myths where women, both goddesses and mortals, are the focus. Physical beauty could be a source of power for women who were otherwise powerless and treated like property and this beauty could affect the course of history (Helen of Troy); sometimes immortal beauty was a trap for mortal men (the goddesses Athena, Aphrodite and Hera); and sometimes the beauty of intelligence, faithfulness and honour was an unbreakable tie that pulled a man home from war and adventure (Penelope and Odysseus).

These stories from Greek mythology have counterparts in later history, too. Think, for instance, of Marie Antoinette as an 18th century Helen; think of men coming home from war in our own time. Christeson’s lecture will focus on the myths referenced in McCampbell’s paintings and discuss the parallels in today’s world, the resonance of the myths have had throughout western civilization and the art they have inspired.
