Deep Down explores the complex issue of mining by mountaintop removal, a practice pitting energy needs and economic gain against concerns for the environment. Filmmakers Sally Rubin and Jen Gilomen focus on the struggles of a community in Eastern Kentucky faced with the decision of whether to sell their land to mining interests, tempted by profit but aware of the destruction of the place that has been home for generations. The film invites debate about the price -- economic, personal, social, environmental -- of society’s continued dependence on fossil fuels.

Deep Down was funded in part by ITVS.
