The 2010 Annual International Black Film Festival (IBFF) will open at Vanderbilt's Sarratt Cinema with Blood Done Sign My Name.

Fifty years ago, Nashville was besieged with tension and unrest as students across the city began a movement of sit-ins that quickly engulfed the South, giving it precisely the momentum it would need for the turbulent social transformations that were to follow. In honor and memory of the sacrifice and strength of these radical heroes, the IBFFN will open with the gripping feature film “Blood Done Sign My Name,” written and directed by Jeb Stuart, renowned for “The Fugitive” and “Die Hard.”

Set in a rural town in North Carolina just two years after the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr., the drama is based on the true story of a child who witnesses a brutal, senseless murder which quickly dissolves the small community into the guttural emotions of sorrow, fear, and rage. Yet the triumph of this tragedy is the refinement of certain souls in this furnace of racial hatred and violence.

In the re-telling of such hi-stories, there is no room for flat characters and lazy dialogue; Stuart brings his best to the screen with layered characters and poignant discourse. The cast offers greatly to this, as Nate Parker (of “The Great Debaters”), Lela Rochon, and even the late John Hope Franklin help in the telling of this tale. “Blood Done Sign My Name” is as personal and unique as its very title, and promises to leave you as all great films do, pondering the questions that have been hidden by their answers.
