Coinciding with our 50th anniversary, Cheekwood Collects surveys the rich legacy of gifts and acquisitions that have helped us build our art and garden collections, presenting highlights from the last fifty years. As a relatively young museum and garden, Cheekwood is fortunate to have a robust collection of more than 8000 objects, including paintings, prints, photographs, sculptures, and decorative arts. After a half century, we are still growing, and with our anniversary we also celebrate a number of recent and new additions to the collection.

Many of our gifts and acquisitions may already seem familiar: snuff bottles, sculptures by William Edmondson, art of the American West, The Eight, fashion photographs, and works by Red Grooms and Andy Warhol, to name a few. We have also acquired some unexpected delights, like an illustrated page from the Koran and a Northwest Indian mask. In our gardens, we’ve been excited to receive boxwood, daffodil, daylily, dogwood, herb magnolia, redbuds, and Southeastern U.S. natives in addition to many others.

This exhibition tells a fascinating story of how Cheekwood acquired our major museum and garden collection and how we continue to cultivate and grow it as both a cultural destination and an education resource. We invite you and all of our visitors to take a fresh look at the collection and its history, and help us imagine what it can become as we prepare to serve and inspire future generations.
