The Tennessee Association of Craft Artists (TACA) celebrates its 33rd anniversary of the annual TACA Fall Crafts Fair, beginning Friday, September 23 through Sunday, September 25 in Nashville’s Centennial Park.

Woodcarving, stained glass, sculpture, pottery and jewelry are among the works of traditional fine craft more than 45,000 people view each fall. The TACA Fall Craft Fair affords visitors the opportunity to engage in craft from the creation through the finished product, and from the emerging artist through the most accomplished. Vivid glazes, translucent textures in glass and works in wood begging to be touched enchant visitors of all ages, tastes and budgets as they enjoy this unique buying venue.

The 2011 Guest Demonstration Program, a signature element of the TACA Fall Craft Fair, will feature Olen Bryant. This master artist and Tennessee resident will return to the grounds of Centennial Park not within the four tent walls of an exhibitor, but as a guest demonstrator, joining the ranks of artists such as Sylvia Hyman, Akira Blount and Newberry & Sons’ Chairs.

The Saturday afternoon program will feature Bryant demonstrating live some of the methods he uses in creating pieces of fine craft in his signature style. Additionally, those who are in attendance will have an opportunity to find out more about his techniques, inspirations and a host of other topics through an informal question and answer period. Finally, Bryant will be available for signings or one-on-one conversations as the program wraps.

From his well-known sleeping stones to clay angels to wood figures, Bryant creates with an eye focused steadily on the balance between the materials and the image he holds in his head. Faithful to the materials of the region, the clean lines and round figures that mark his work are a clear response to what the artist sees as the potential of the wood, stone or clay with which he is working. Olen Bryant has a Master in Fine Art from Cranbrook Academy of Art and was awarded the Distinguished Artist Award during 2007’s Governor’s Awards in the Arts and holds the title of Professor Emeritus at Clarksville’s Austin Peay State University. His work can be found in private and public collections across the region.

As an added component, the University School of Nashville’s Tibbott Center Gallery will present an exhibition of Bryant’s work, opening Thursday, September 01 and continuing through September 29. The exhibit will feature a carefully selected group of nearly two dozen clay and wood pieces, each exemplifying the style of fine craft synonymous with the artist. The Tibbott Center Gallery is located on the campus of University School of Nashville and is open Monday through Friday from 9am - 2:00pm and by appointment.
