Train and garden enthusiasts of all ages will be fascinated with the delightful architecture, landscapes and realistic effects in the Cheekwood’s Model Railroad Garden exhibition, Trains! Tennessee in G. This enchanting outdoor exhibition takes visitors across Tennessee with model trains, miniature representations of the state’s historic landmarks, and colorful gardens. The buildings have been intricately handcrafted using natural materials, including twigs, bark, leaves, acorns and pebbles. The landscape is made up of over 2,500 tiny trees, shrubs, groundcovers and flowering plants in 250 varieties. Train sound effects and a waterfall capture visitors’ imaginations, while tiny people and animals give the exhibit a storybook feel.

      The gardens and the Train exhibit were awesome. The restaurant is delightful. A reservation is highly recommended as it fills quickly for lunch. The only disappointment, was the gardens have many... Expand

      The gardens and the Train exhibit were awesome. The restaurant is delightful. A reservation is highly recommended as it fills quickly for lunch. The only disappointment, was the gardens have many limitations for wheelchairs. I brought a wheelchair visitor and missed many of the gardens due to accessibility. Collapse

      My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed the April 9 grand opening of the Garden Railroad at Cheekwood. It is a first-class exhibit with 7 independently operated trains on loops at different levels. It was interesting seeing it during daylight and then again under special lighting effects after dark. In addition to operating "G" gauge trains, the exhibit includes a number of model buildings of the Nashville area, all constructed of natural materials. I did not make a list of them but recall that the Parthenon, Union Station, and the Capital are all represented. The passenger train on the highest loop is my favorite. It includes six "Crescent Limited" heavyweight style cars pulled by two Southern Railway F3 diesels. This is a beautiful train even though the correct engine for these cars would be a steam locomotive. CSX is represented in the model trains, but Nashville's historic railroads, the L&N, NC&StL, and Tennessee Central are absent. This is probably because no ready-to-run models are available in "G" scale for these railroads. Perhaps someone will custom decorate some models and donate or loan them to the exhibit. I looked for Utube videos but apparently none are available yet.
