The Jazz on the Move series is going into its fourth year, and is a collaborative venture with the Frist Center for the Visual Arts. The monthly series runs from February to May, and consists of a performance and lecture spotlighting a major figure in jazz history.
Saxophonist Lester Young, or "Prez" as he was known, was an important saxophonist of the swing and bebop eras. His cool, lyrical style was a major influence on players such as Zoot Sims and Stan Getz. Best known for his work with Count Basie and Billie Holliday, Young also appeared with some of the major bands of the 30's, 40's, and 50's. Saxophonist Denis Solee will lead a nine-piece group of all-star musicians in performing works associated with this jazz legend, and illustrating his style.
"The Prez Conference" refers to a 1978 recording by saxophonist and bandleader Dave Pell. That project, legendary among jazz connoisseurs, took famous works associated with Lester Young and arranged them for an ensemble that included three tenor saxophones, a baritone, and vocalist (Joe Williams) In that spirit, the Jazz Workshop's own Wayne Dowell will join Denis and the group as guest vocalist.
The program takes place on Sunday, May 8 at 3:00pm in the auditorium at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts, 919 Broadway, Nashville, Tenn. All performances in the series are free and open to the public. Those attending Jazz on the Move will be able to visit the Frist's exhibits free of charge, and will also receive discounted parking.
