Nashville Jazz Workshop celebrates Black History Month with this special event: "A Dream Re-Awakened: Geary Moore and the Freedom Riders featuring Dr. Rip Patton" in the Jazz Cave.
Ernest "Rip" Patton, Jr. was a 21-year old music major at Tennessee State in 1961 when he became involved in the Civil Rights movement and joined the Freedom Ride to Jackson, Mississippi. Besides being arrested and jailed, he was also one of 14 TSU students expelled for participating in the Rides. Since that time, he worked as a jazz drummer and later as a long distance truck driver.
Since his recent retirement, Rip Patton has received several honorary doctoral degrees, including one from his original school, Tennessee State University . He has also returned to his first love, jazz drumming. For this special February 19 event he will join a jazz band with guitarist Geary Moore, bassist John Birdsong, and pianist Joe Davidian, as "Geary Moore and the Freedom Riders." Dr. Patton will also give a presentation on his experiences as a Freedom Rider.
Geary Moore moved to Nashville after a 30-year career in New York as a jazz guitarist. A protege of George Benson and Jimmy Ponder, Mr. Moore has worked with jazz luminaries such as Jimmy McGriff, Arthur Prysock, Slide Hampton, T.S. Monk, David "Fat Head" Newman, Dr. Lonnie Smith, and many others. He also taught, for 5 years, at the world famous JAZZ MOBILE in Harlem, NY.
