NJW resumes the Contemporary Jazz Series in 2011 on Sunday, February 13 with a performance by soulful jazz vocalist J'Nae.

Vocalist, pianist, and songwriter J'Nae has been performing since before the age of 10. She graduated with honors with a Bachelor of Music from the University of Southern California as the first person to major in Vocal Jazz. After USC, she completed post-graduate work in Music Business and Songwriting from UCLA, and has studied at the Nashville Jazz Workshop. J'Nae was one of only three jazz artists named to Music Connection's "Top 100 Hot Unsigned Artists," and was also named "Top Female Artist" for the "So Cal Live Acoustic Competition," a competition with over 15,000 applicants from around the world. She has two CD's, "Soultry Jazz" and "Unconditionally," receiving regular airplay and is finishing work on her third album, "Flow," due out in Spring 2011.

The show starts at 7:00pm and features J'Nae (vocals, keyboard), Pat Bergeson (guitar), Joe Davidian (piano), Mike Rinne (bass), Marcus Finnie (drums), Christina Watson (backing vocals), and Maureen Murphy (backing vocals).

About the series: The Contemporary Jazz Series, hosted by Rahsaan Barber, is designed to present new, original, and cutting edge jazz that may not have been heard before in the Jazz Cave. Describing "contemporary jazz," series host Rahsaan Barber explained that "just as the jazz of Ella Fitzgerald and Count Basie was influenced by musicians’ and audiences’ affinities for the blues of Beale Street and the bright lights of Broadway, so it is with contemporary jazz, which draws much influence from more modern strains of American music -- including funk, gospel, hip hop -- and more international 'cargo,' including Indian ragas, Cuban descargas and European classical music."
