The Creative Arts Project of the Middle Tennessee Mental Health and Substance Abuse Coalition announces the publication of a book, Challenged Lives and Artistic Vision, featuring the art and stories of 27 talented consumer artists from Middle Tennessee who participate in the Creative Arts Project. Challenged Lives and Artistic Vision grew out of a research project with Vanderbilt University assessing the impact of participating in art training along with other peer support center activities at sites in Middle Tennessee. The book will be introduced at the Phoenix Awards Dinner on Thursday, February 17, 2011 at Second Presbyterian Church. Awards will be received by some of Nashville’s most dedicated volunteers. The contributing artists featured in the book will be present at the dinner.

“Creating art is a release, helps deal with dreams and hallucinations.” _Thaddaeus Tekkell
“Creating art is an outlet for my energy that diverts me from some of my health challenges.” – Anne Ambrose

Recovery is a goal that each person reaches in their own way with appropriate behavioral health services and support, and these persons chose to include creating art in their process. Each page of Challenged Lives and Artistic Vision displays an image of the artist, images of their artwork and an interview with each artist describing their process and the influence of art on their path to recovery.

The Middle Tennessee Mental Health and Substance Abuse Coalition (MTMHSAC) connects artists and communities to promote understanding, acceptance, and success of people in mental health and addiction recovery. MTMHSAC is a non-profit organization that sponsors activities to raise public awareness about recovery from mental illness, alcohol and drug abuse and to reduce stigma against those living with these disorders.
