Imagine playing hide-and-seek with a robot, or conversing with a machine that appears to think and respond like a human. On February 19, Middle Tennesseans will have the opportunity to do that and more at Adventure Science Center’s new temporary exhibit, “Robotics.”

On exhibit through May 8, the 2,500-square-foot Robotics explores the relationship between human and machine through a series of hands-on displays. Developed by the Carnegie Science Center in Pittsburgh, “Robotics” provides an exclusive look into artificial intelligence and the future of technology in an exhibit that is appealing to visitors of all ages and all levels of computer knowledge.

“People are constantly wondering where technology will take us next,” said Susan Duvenhage, CEO of Adventure Science Center. “’Robotics’ offers a unique view into the future of computers and science in an exhibit that is engaging for the whole family.”

“Robotics” includes more than a dozen interactive displays divided into seven different themes: Introduction to Robots, Sensing, Thinking, Acting, Applications and the Children’s Zone. Among the various hands-on activities with these themes are:

    · Fool the Motion Detector – Visitors to the “Sensing” display will learn how robots use ultrasound to “see” motion and are challenged to fool the electronic “eye” by moving slowly and unnoticed across a screen.

    · Make My Machine – Guests have an opportunity to learn about programming robots by working hands-on with a partner to “program” a machine in the “Thinking” display.

    · DynaVox – Among the “Applications” activities, visitors can experiment with a voice synthesizer and make the machine speak various typed words and recognize icons.

    · ROBOTIX Construction Area – Children can use their imaginations to build and operate a motorized robot using construction sets from Learning Curve Toys in the “Children’s Zone.”

Guests who visit “Robotics” on Feb. 19 will also have the opportunity to attend “Making Stuff,” a day-long event hosted by Adventure Science Center to celebrate Engineering Day and to explore the science of making everyday items stronger, smarter, cleaner and smaller.

“Robotics” is included with regular admission to the Adventure Science Center, which is $12 for adults and $9 for children ages 2 to 12, seniors 65+, active military families (with ID) and college students (with ID).
