Virginia Mecklenburg, Senior Curator, Smithsonian American Art Museum
The decades following World War II were stimulating times for American art. Working in New York, California, the South, and abroad, abstract artists created compositions that addressed
contemporary social concerns as well as personal history. All but ignored in the 1940s, by the late 1950s, the artists were credited with helping the United States claim cultural preeminence on the world stage. Virginia Mecklenburg will trace the rise of American abstraction during the 1950s through the personal stories of the artists.
Virginia Mecklenburg has been on the staff of the Smithsonian American Art Museum since 1979. Her research interests include American art and culture, Ashcan art, New Deal art, American abstraction, pop art and Latino art. She has organized 25 exhibitions, the most recent of which were Telling Stories: Norman Rockwell from the Collections of George Lucas and Steven Spielberg (2010), Modern Masters from the Smithsonian American Art Museum (2008) and Earl Cunningham’s America (2007).
