What was the role of women in the Civil Rights Movement? How did they contribute to the success of many of the major civil rights events? What wisdom can women of today learn from the courageous women who fought for justice? This conference will remind some and introduce to others, prominent women who were part of this great movement.

Sue Thrasher became involved in the civil rights movement in 1961 while a student at Scarritt College in Nashville, TN after a friend was denied service at a local eatery. She is currently the Coordinator of the Five College Schools Partnership program of Five Colleges Incorporated in Amherst, MA. She holds a doctorate in Educational Policy and Research from the School of Education at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and is a former member of the staff and Board of Directors of the Highlander Research and Education Center in TN. Dr. Thrasher is the author of several books including the collaborative volume, "Deep in Our Hearts: Nine White Women in the Freedom Movement."

Billy Jean Young is a poet, actor, activist, author, and educator, and has spent a lifetime focusing her craft on the Civil Rights Movement and Alabama Black Belt life. Her one-woman play, "Fannie Lou Hamer: This Little Light..." focuses on the life story of Fannie Lou Hamer, a human rights activist and sharecropper from Sunflower County, Mississippi. Young gives voice to the social and economic injustices currently affecting the people of the Black Belt region of the deep South.

One-woman play: "Fannie Lou Hamer: This Little Light..." on Friday April 1
