Watkins College of Art, Design & Film is pleased to invite the public to a lecture by noted ceramist and educator Regis Brodie. The lecture will be held in room 804 on the Watkins campus on Tuesday, March 22, from 6-8pm. Watkins is located at 2298 Rosa L Parks Blvd. in Nashville.
Brodie is an Emeritus professor of Art at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY. He received his MFA from the Tyler School of Art at Temple University and his MED and BS from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
Brodie works in porcelain and stoneware and his colorful, surface layered ceramics are the culmination of this training as a painter and sculptor. His work is included in more than 25 universities, museums and collections around the world, including The National Ceramics Museum of France (Sevres), The International Ceramics Museum (Faenza, Italy), The World Ceramic Exposition (Icheon, Korea), the Regional Museum of Art (Tula, Russia), the Everson Museum of Art (Syracuse, NY) and others. Brodie has lectured nationally at 41 sites, including The Smithsonian Institution, Princeton University, Harvard University and at almost 20 locations around the world.
According to Brodie, “My methodology of making art is exploratory in nature. It deals with the direct manipulation of materials and processes. My vessel or sculptural forms are elegant and classical. The surface painting, drawing, and textural treatment, on the other hand, is out of the Abstract Expressionist and Post Modernist Schools. I love the interplay that is created between the refinements of the form and the spontaneously decorated surface. It contrasts the elegant with the organic. I am tight and at the same time loose.”
