VISUAL ARTS + MUSEUMS
Blackbird Tattoo and Gallery presents: "Bound" and "Material"
May 1 - May 20, 2011
Bound - Main Gallery
This month Blackbird Tattoo and Gallery brings you Bound, a visual exploration of the bonds that tie us as well as those that set us free, through ephemeral fine metal and found object sculpture. Kest Schwartzman’s work illustrates the delicate captivity of our world with her objects of confinement, such as cages and handcuffs, tediously crafted of feathers and other fragile ...materials. Olivia Samples brings her collection of home-like structures created from dissected owl pellets, illustrating our ties to the universe as something we’ve embued in the very four walls of the birth room. Samples views the structures as a place to explore these ties as our connection to the realm of dreams rather than as our bonds of captivity. Sharing the space will be Emerging featuring students from the Appalachian Center for Craft.
Material - Lower Gallery
In the Basement Series, Blackbird presents Material, an installation of manipulated materials featuring the work of Matt Christy, Kelly Bonadies, and Ryan Hogan. Christy’s work portrays the physical and tactile aspects of raw canvas, charcoal, and paint. Bonadies uses metal, leather, and wood in lieu of canvas to create complex geometric shapes. Hogan flirts with the non-representational through varying mixed media, exposing the evolution of his own work. Prints from previously spotlighted artists will also be for sale on the evening of the show, all ranging from $10 - $30.
