Evan Cobb is an instrumentalist, composer, and educator based in Nashville, TN. After diverse musical studies including choirs, piano lessons, and a college oboe performance degree, Evan found his voice on the saxophone. This included founding and leading the jamband Buddha's Belly, nominated as a finalist for Best New Entertainer in the Chicago Music Awards of 2005. After two years of jazz studies culminating in a master's degree in 2008, Evan moved to Nashville, Tennessee. Since his relocation, Evan has worked with myriad ensembles and styles, including the Nashville Symphony, the Nashville Jazz Orchestra, The Dynamites, and T. Graham Brown, to name a few. Cobb has over 30 private students of the oboe, saxophone, clarinet, and flute, and teaches a college course on music appreciation. He hosts the monthly Jazz Jam Sessions at NJW and is working on a CD of original compositions written for those performances. For more on Evan, check out his terrific website and blog.

The show starts at 7:00pm and in addition to Evan Cobb on saxophone, features Matthew White (trumpet), Bruce Dudley (piano), Jonathan Wires (bass) and Josh Hunt (drums). No advanced reservations. (Photo credit: Ryan Scammell)

About the series: The Contemporary Jazz Series, hosted by Rahsaan Barber, is designed to present new, original, and cutting edge jazz that may not have been heard before in the Jazz Cave. Describing "contemporary jazz," series host Rahsaan Barber explained that "just as the jazz of Ella Fitzgerald and Count Basie was influenced by musicians’ and audiences’ affinities for the blues of Beale Street and the bright lights of Broadway, so it is with contemporary jazz, which draws much influence from more modern strains of American music -- including funk, gospel, hip hop -- and more international 'cargo,' including Indian ragas, Cuban descargas and European classical music."
