The filmography of Terrence Malick spans four decades and, with this summer's release of the highly anticipated THE TREE OF LIFE, includes only five features. While there are certainly far more prolific filmmakers, few have reached the heights of Malick's oeuvre - a transcendent body of work unified by a rapturous pictorial beauty and a sense of wonder often embodied by its pioneering characters. It's with great pleasure that we offer a chance to view Malick's earlier films chronologically in their intended format on a large screen. Critic Matt Zoller Seitz commented that "other people direct movies. Terrence Malick builds cathedrals". This June, church falls on Tuesday.

    BADLANDS
Of its period-piece setting and the potential to clash with its low $300k budget, Malick said "I tried to keep the 1950's to a bare minimum...I wanted the picture to set up like a fairy tale, outside time". Young garbageman Kit Carruthers (Martin Sheen) and his girlfriend, Holly (Sissy Spacek), kill Holly's father (Warren Oates) in South Dakota and hit the road on the run from the law. Writer-director Terrence Malick's script (for his feature film debut), based on real murders committed by Charlie Starkweather and Caril Ann Fugate in 1958, does not judge its characters as they make their way to the Badlands of South Dakota, leaving a trail of senseless and random murders in their wake. Debuting at the 1973 New York Film Festival, BADLANDS was met with great acclaim upon its release.

    Dir. Terrence Malick, USA, 1973, 95min, 35mm
