The filmography of Terrence Malick spans four decades and, with this summer's release of the highly anticipated THE TREE OF LIFE, includes only five features. While there are certainly far more prolific filmmakers, few have reached the heights of Malick's oeuvre - a transcendent body of work unified by a rapturous pictorial beauty and a sense of wonder often embodied by its pioneering characters. It's with great pleasure that we offer a chance to view Malick's earlier films chronologically in their intended format on a large screen. Critic Matt Zoller Seitz commented that "other people direct movies. Terrence Malick builds cathedrals". This June, church falls on Tuesday.

    THE THIN RED LINE
It would be 20 years after DAYS OF HEAVEN that Malick would return to feature filmmaking. With a big budget and an all-star cast -- featuring Sean Penn, George Clooney, Nick Nolte and Adrien Brody -- this lyrical and and spectacularly-mounted retelling of James Jones's novel about the 1942 battle for Guadalcanal was one of the most deeply philosophical films ever released by a major Hollywood studio, a thought-provoking meditation on man, nature, and violence that in turn was nominated for seven Oscars. With narration by Pvt. Witt (Jim Cavaziel), the men of C-Company become a tight-knit group as they each individually face the horrors of war to hold onto a key-positioned airfield.

    Dir. Terrence Malick, USA, 1998, 170min, 35mm
