Thursday and Friday evenings from May 5 through June 23, 2011, visitors will be invited to create a Shaker quilt square. Using various fabric pieces and materials, visitors will experience the simplicity and perfection developed by the Shakers while making a replica of an eight-inch Shaker quilt square. In addition to their function as bedding, quilts also served as records of family or community history, observations of surrounding landscape, and documentation of life cycle events. The quilt squares can be kept or donated to the Frist Center. The donated quilt squares will become part of a completed quilt that will be constructed at the end of the month. All ages are encouraged to participate.

This activity has been developed in conjunction with The Andrews Shaker Collection: Gather Up the Fragments, which focuses upon the collection of Faith and Edward Deming Andrews. More than 270 objects, including furniture, drawings, household objects, textiles, baskets and kitchen implements, will be exhibited from May 20 through August 21, 2011. The art-making activity in the Grand Lobby is free and open to all visitors.
