ROAD MOVIES of the 70s and 80s

The great American highway is a vast stretch of endless skies and wondrous beauty. However, the great American road movies of the 70s and 80s would have you believe that, out there among the muscle cars and lost weekends, a darker undercurrent might send you face to face with grizzled drifters and hit men, evil big rigs, vampires and satanists, all possibly with a serious case of road rage. But hey, that's just the movies. If you can't hit the road this summer, you can save the ga$ and park your rear at the Belcourt throughout August and on into Labor Day.

All films are presented in 35mm with showtimes TBA unless indicated below.

VANISHING POINT
One-time cop, racer and Vietnam vet Kowalski (Barry Newman) works for a car delivery service and agrees to motor a supercharged 1970 Dodge Challenger from Colorado to California. For grins and giggles, he bets that he can deposit the car in California in less than 15 hours, setting the stage for an bennie-fueled high-speed adventure. Initially banned in the US, the film was immediately successful overseas and incrementally found its US audience due in part to TV broadcast and, much later, direct homage in Quentin Tarantino's DEATH PROOF. Look out for cameos from Delaney and Bonnie as well as a young Charlotte Rampling. The music was overseen by legendary Nashville producer Jimmy Bowen.
