ROAD MOVIES of the 70s and 80s

The great American highway is a vast stretch of endless skies and wondrous beauty. However, the great American road movies of the 70s and 80s would have you believe that, out there among the muscle cars and lost weekends, a darker undercurrent might send you face to face with grizzled drifters and hit men, evil big rigs, vampires and satanists, all possibly with a serious case of road rage. But hey, that's just the movies. If you can't hit the road this summer, you can save the ga$ and park your rear at the Belcourt throughout August and on into Labor Day.

All films are presented in 35mm with showtimes TBA unless indicated below.

    DUEL
This 1971 made-for-TV thriller made studio executives take notice of its young director. Businessman David Mann (Dennis Weaver) is in a hurry to get to an appointment, so he innocently passes a slow-moving big rig on an isolated highway to be on his way. But that turns out to be the wrong move. Soon, he finds himself mercilessly pursued by the truck and its mystery driver, whose motives are unknown. Dir. Steven Spielberg, USA, 1971, 90min, PG, 35mm

    THE SUGARLAND EXPRESS
Goldie Hawn and William Atherton are Lou-Jean and Clovis Poplin, a down-on-their-luck couple who lose their child to the state of Texas and decide to pull out all stops to get him back. Lou-Jean pops Clovis out of jail and the two make off with their son, taking him away from his foster parents. Thier flight escalates when they take a state trooper hostage with media and cops in tow. Based on a real incident in 1969 Texas.

Dir. Steven Spielberg, USA, 1974, 110min, PG, 35mm
