Poets and Prophets: Salute to Legendary Country Songwriter Don Schlitz
Don Schlitz’s first hit as a songwriter was a career maker—Kenny Rogers’s “The Gambler.” A native of Durham, North Carolina, Schlitz moved to Nashville in 1973. After the blockbuster success of “The Gambler” in 1978, he went on to co-write a long list of country classics, including “On the Other Hand,” “Forever and Ever, Amen,” “Deeper Than the Holler,” “When You Say Nothing at All,” “Give Me Wings,” “Learning to Live Again,” and “Strong Enough to Bend.” Co-writing sessions with Mary Chapin Carpenter produced “I Feel Lucky,” “He Thinks He’ll Keep Her,” and “I Take My Chances.” Schlitz is a member of the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. He has been named ASCAP Country Songwriter of the Year four times, and has won multiple Grammy, CMA, and ACM awards. This interview and performance will be illustrated with vintage photographs, film footage, and recordings. The program will be streamed live at www.countrymusichalloffame.org. After the program, Schlitz will sign autographs in the Museum Store.
