In the 1970s, aspiring photographer Raeanne Rubenstein worked for many of the most popular magazines of the day. Her particular beat was the flamboyant artists and musicians who lived and worked in New York City’s famed Lower East Side, home to the Fillmore East as well as Abbie Hoffman, Jimi Hendrix, and other now-legendary characters. Her clients included then-alternative magazines such as the Village Voice and Rolling Stone, and later, included mainstream magazines such as Life and People. One day, she was sent on an assignment to photograph an artist who was making a big name for himself in the worlds of advertising, art, and music—Andy Warhol. Rubenstein and Warhol immediately hit it off, and for more than a decade she was a fixture at his Factory, both as friend and documentarian. On film, she captured Warhol with the legends of his day, from Federico Fellini and Lou Reed to Halston and Superstars Viva and Jackie Curtis. She was also present when the artist shot and directed films, took Polaroids, painted, and created Interview magazine. Dipping into her rich archives, Rubenstein will share some of her photographs and talk with the audience about her experiences at the Factory and what it was like to take pictures of Warhol and his coterie of assistants, musicians, mirth makers, and hangers on.
