Pittsburgh based pop rock band My Cardboard Spaceship Adventure (MCSA) is known by many for its captivating melodies, infectious hooks, and spirited live performaces. Formed in early 2008, the band started out as the brainchild of frontman and primary songwriter Mikey Meiers. Meiers. While writing and recording the songs that would eventually become the band’s first EP, Lets Play It Safe, Meiers began his search for solid and dedicated musicians. Drummer Buddy Hoebler, who worked with Meiers in the past, was the first to join and became a permanent member after collaborating with Meiers during the recording process. The group then lucked out and found keyboardist Alex Robertson to fill the out the sound. “Listening to the rough recordings, I was really struck by the sincerity and simplicity of the songs; no other local bands were writing in the pop genre like they were. It was definitely something I wanted to be a part of.” says Robertson, recalling his first impressions of the band. “And after meeting the guys and seeing how determined they were to make the band successful, I really wanted in!” Robertson would later bring in Andrew Hapeman, a fellow music school student and roommate, as the band’s current bassist.

While the band began as a solo effort, the band’s iconic sound is attributed to the influence and perspective of each member. My Cardboard Spaceship Adventure has a similar style to bands such as Relient K, Hellogoodbye, and Something Corporate. Drawing from their experience in the jazz and metal genres, Hapeman and Hoebler’s rhythm section provides the songs with a solid foundation that never becomes uninteresting and repetitive. “My role in this band is so much more diverse than I had originally envisioned. I keep the groove locked in on each song, but I also explore my creativity to come up with some truly vivid bass lines. Prior to MCSA, I thought pop-punk meant just driving eighth notes, but, as I am constantly discovering, there’s so much more, ” says Hapeman. Robertson’s eclectic keyboard work, which includes pop piano, vintage synthesizers, and electronica-inspired sequences and drum beats gives every song a unique sound and helps to set the band apart from their more guitar-based contemporaries.

MCSA wasted no time establishing themselves as a band. Through constant promotion via social networking sites and the EP’s availability on iTunes, Let’s Play It Safe allowed MCSA to build a sizable fan base both at home and around the world. Since then, the band has opened for notable acts Mae (Capital/Tooth & Nail), My Favorite Highway (Virgin), Cash Cash (Universal), Emily Osment (Hannah Montana), School Boy Humor (Vagrant), Punchline (Fueled By Ramen/Modern Short Stories), Farewell (Epitaph) and Stellar Kart (Word/INO). This allowed MCSA to book 2 east coast/mid-west summer tours as well as several out of state weekend tours, and were featured on the 2009 Kevin Says Stage on The Vans Warped Tour. In August of 2010, the band released a new studio EP "Before You Change The World... " which is available on iTunes worldwide and is distributed by Hot Topic retail stores. The new EP has earned the band notice from the press in the form of featured articles in two hometown newspapers, and songs from the EP have been played on Chicago’s Fearless Radio and Pittsburgh’s alternative station WXDX.
