Nashville Cats: Salute to Session Player James Burton
James Burton first drew attention while performing on the Louisiana Hayride at age fourteen. He went on to become one of the most influential Fender Telecaster pickers in country and rock music. His signature sound is featured on the Dale Hawkins classic “Susie-Q” and the Ricky Nelson tracks “Believe What You Say,” “Hello Mary Lou,” and “Poor Little Fool.” A giant on the Los Angeles session scene, Burton brought a new dimension to country music with contributions to the work of Merle Haggard (“Mama Tried,” “Workin’ Man Blues”), Emmylou Harris (“Two More Bottles of Wine”), and Jerry Lee Lewis (“Rockin’ My Life Away”), as well as to songs by the Everly Brothers, John Denver, Roy Orbison, Gram Parsons, Buck Owens, and Elvis Presley. He toured extensively with Denver, Harris, and Presley, among others. Burton’s more recent work includes sessions with Elvis Costello, Jim Lauderdale, and Brad Paisley. This interview and performance will be illustrated with vintage photographs, film footage, and recordings. After the program, Burton will sign autographs in the Museum Store. Included with museum admission. Free to museum members. The program will be streamed live at www.countrymusichalloffame.org.
