Great Plains Native Arts: Expressions of Cultural Life and Traditions
Emma I. Hansen, Senior Curator, Plains Indian Museum, Buffalo Bill Historical Center
Native American people understood the vast land of the Great Plains to be rich in resources, with tall grass prairies abundant with herds of buffalo and other grazing animals and fertile river valleys that supported farming traditions. They lived successfully in this land for generations following a way of life guided by core beliefs about the people’s relationship to the land, sky, and universe. The magnificent arts of Plains Native people also have such cultural and spiritual underpinnings. Beyond their inherent beauty and exceptional artistry, Plains Native arts also are powerful and often multi-layered expressions of cultural knowledge and understandings, biographical and historical experiences, and a spirituality that guides all aspects of life. This presentation will explore the cultural and historical contexts of individual examples of Great Plains Native arts for a better understanding of the traditions, values, and lives of the artists who created them.
