Tennessee Rep Producing Artistic Director René D. Copeland will kick-off the 2011 Brooks Fund Speaker Series with a discussion of gay themes in the works one of America’s greatest playwrights: Tennessee Williams.
Williams life was bookended by fairly scarring examples of attitudes toward homosexuality during his lifetime: While growing up, Williams was called “Miss Nancy” by his tough shoe salesman father, and in 1979—4 years before his death—Williams suffered a gay-bashing in Key West at the hands of five teenage boys.
Williams' gayness was an open secret he neither publicly confirmed nor denied until the post-Stonewall era when gay critics took him to task for not coming out, which he did in a series of public utterances, his Memoirs (1975), self-portraits in some of the later plays, and the novel, Moise and the World of Reason (1975), all of which document Williams' sense of himself as a gay man.
REPaloud means Reading Excellent Plays Aloud. This popular series began during the 2009-10 season and has grown each season. Highlighting award-winning plays in a staged reading format, REPaloud has featured plays such as August: Osage County by Tracy Letts, Ruined by Lynn Nottage, Take Me Out by Richard Greenberg, among others.
