Jezebel's Got the Blues...and Other Works of Imagination
September 15-September 17, 2011

Jezebel’s Got the Blues, eight dramatic readings written and illustrated with original paintings by Merrill Farnsworth and accompanied by the music of Phil Madeira, will be performed by local theater favorites Nan Gurley, Chip Arnold, Bonnie Keen, Carol Ponder, Jon Royal and Robert Kiefer in Christ Church Cathedral’s Cheek Hall at 900 Broadway in downtown Nashville. In modern usage, the name of Jezebel is often a synonym for sexually promiscuous and sometimes controlling women – someone to be warned against. But, like real people, there is more to the one-dimensional icon of seduction and evil. Most likely she – and all the Old Testament characters – encountered the same issues that we face with love, despair and struggles with faith. These topics, and more, are explored in these re-imaginings of Old Testament stories from new points of view - a rat on Noah’s ark has an existential crisis; Lot’s wife, a lonely and unappreciated, has her breath taken away by an unexpected kiss; a conversation between Sarah’s doubt and Hagar’s defiance emerges from the depths of fierce mother-love; a whale rises from under the sea to give a reluctant prophet a piece of his mind; and other strange witnesses to puzzling stories come forth to have their say in the eight stories.
