Ethel Smith Gallery - Terri Jordan Artist Terri Jordan tends to create suites of paintings in themes. Most of Jordan’s work interprets a story or person she comes across through random readings or voyeuristic moments. Her newest suite, In-Conceivable, is based on Jordan’s personal experience with infertility. “I was a young adult in the 1980s - when we were told you could have it all – concentrate on the career, marriage and children could come later. No one mentioned things like premature ovary shutdown, or poor egg quality. As I went through the IVF process, I found the mythology and history of infertility intriguing. I am fascinated with the overlapping of superstitions and symbols throughout cultures from Ancient Rome to current day India.” Divided into two sections, one gallery room focuses on fertility symbols and the second space features paintings related to Jordan’s dreams and experiences while going through the IVF program. More “Kahlo-esc” than previous suites, In-Conceivable does still feature the signature female form Jordan is known for. In the painting Spent Jordan’s woman dangles over disintegrating eggs in a barren desert setting, balanced by a lone cactus, symbolic for motherly love, springing up just past her reach.
Jordan has exhibited in group and solo shows in New York and throughout the Southeast. Her paintings are in collections from New York to California, and England. In 2003, the University of Georgia purchased four for their collection. The Agora Gallery in New York City has said that Terri’s paintings “contain the best qualities of both figurative and still life painting,” adding, “Much like Matisse’s women, Jordan’s figures are symbolic statements of serenity, beauty, and ornament. More restful than Matisse’s women, however, Jordan explores a more understated realm of existence and privacy."
An opening reception will be held from 6:00pm-9:00pm on October 1; the show runs through October 29.
