    Dir. Fritz Lang, 1927, Germany/UK, 82min, HD

Academy Award-winning composer (Midnight Express, Flashdance, Top Gun) Giorgio Moroder spent three years traveling the world, gathering as many extant versions of Fritz Lang’s acclaimed 1927 masterpiece together as he could. With them, he rebuilt Lang’s vision from the ground up, eschewing intertitles for the immediacy of subtitles, adding tinting to the original monochromatic image, and composing a new, electronic score with vocal contributions from pop stars like Freddie Mercury, Pat Benetar, Bonnie Tyler, and Adam Ant. The 1984 Moroder reconstruction increased awareness of Lang’s film immeasurably and was, from 1984 until 2001, the most complete version of the film available, while causing a controversial rift amongst film scholars that remains to this day. Following the 2002 and 2010 restorations of Lang’s original versions, the Moroder reconstruction had fallen into limbo due to music rights issues. And now, it re-emerges into the world, struck from one of the only surviving 35mm prints of one of the most distinctive and divisive efforts of film scholarship of the 80s.
