Skyroc: A Benefit for the Oasis Center Bike Workshop in memory of Schuyler Vassen
November 4, 2011
Add Review/Comment
In the early morning of September 14th, 2011, approximately 2:00am, Schuyler Vassen was admitted to Vanderbilt Hospital’s Trauma Center after sustaining a head injury from a bicycle related accident. Unfortunately, Schuyler was not wearing a helmet. After spending most of the day unconscious and on life support, at 8:00pm that evening, Schuyler Vassen was pronounced brain dead and was later taken off life support.
Schuyler was an employee of the Belcourt Theatre but, more importantly, a friend to everyone he encountered during his short stay at the Belcourt. His untimely death struck a blow to his family, friends and fellow staff members. We cannot help but feel this could have all been avoided had Schuyler been wearing his helmet.
It is our intention with this benefit show to raise awareness of the importance of wearing a helmet, and how this simple task could potentially save lives. More importantly, we hope to raise money for the Oasis Center Bicycle Workshop to supply them with helmets, toolkits, t-shirts, and other necessities to help the program reach out to more underprivileged individuals.
About the Oasis Bike Program: Mobilizing Youth Throughout Nashville
The Workshop is a collaboration between the Oasis Center and Halcyon Bike Shop. The Workshop is a free, six-week program open to Nashville’s underprivileged youth.
The Workshop grew from concern that youth of Nashville do not have adequate transportation multiplied by the fact that young people are often overlooked as agents of change. Oasis believes that bicycling is a healthy and sustainable mode of transportation that is often forgotten or considered to be too difficult and dangerous for youth on our urban streets. Other times, bikes are simply unaffordable.
Youth participants will take a pledge promising to pass on the knowledge they gain in these workshops to other young people in their neighborhoods. This will, in turn, engage them in their neighborhoods and the larger community and provide them with the training and experience they need to become activists in their own ways.
Last year over 150 youth completed the bike program. That means 150 more young people own a bike, are safe and skilled riders, and now have access to more opportunities than ever before.
About the Concert:
The all ages concert features Colorfeels, The Grayces, Buffalo Clover and Jessica Breanne & the Electric Hearts. The night will also offer videos, dance, and door prizes; including a brand new bicycle built and donated by Halcyon Bike Shop and Bern® helmets designed by local Nashville artists. All proceeds from the evening will benefit the Oasis Center Bike Workshop.
