    Lula Washington Dance Theater (LWDT), led by its namesake, the renowned choreographer of sequences for major films Avatar and Disney’s The Little Mermaid, performs at Cumberland County Playhouse (Mainstage) on October 25 at 7pm. Selected as one of a dozen venues for the three-year nationally prestigious SouthArts Dance Touring Initiative, the Playhouse is honored as the company’s opening tour venue for 2011-12. The SouthArts program (formerly Southern Arts Federation), is supported by National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), to strengthen audiences for contemporary modern dance and ballet in the Southern USA. CCP is the only rural venue selected.
    One of the most admired African-American contemporary dance companies in the world, LWDT is known for powerful, high energy dancing and unique choreography. The company blends modern dance with hip-hop, jazz, African, ballet, performance art, acting, and sometimes singing. It reflects the African-American experience through movement, and Lula herself gives the company its special “voice” with commitment to work that explores social issues, African-American history and culture.
