Premiere Gallery presents Ray Sandusky: Lids & Finials. Ray Sandusky is a Middle-Tennessee based photographer and wood-lathe sculptor. A variety of wood-created works from the artist's collection will be presented, with a focus on shape and form. Each sculpture is crafted from hardwoods local to the Nashville area. From the artist's statement: "When selecting wood as a medium to produce objects of art, it was natural that I gravitated toward God’s greatest creation in vegetation. I admire God’s artistry in creating a material that has such broad application. Each piece has it own unique character, grain pattern and form, from which I strive for revelation through the process of turning, carving and finishing." Sandusky uses only woods from trees that have fallen naturally, or which have been cleared for land use projects.
Sandusky is a member of the American Association of Woodturners; the Tennessee Association of Woodturners (Chapter President 2008 - present); the American Craft Council; and The Tennessee State Museum, among other groups. His works are owned by the Permanent Collection of American Contemporary Art at the Tennessee State Museum. In addition to having wood objects in collections throughout the USA, other items are owned and on display in Italy, Sweden, Israel, England and Canada.
The exhibit opens on Saturday, November 5 and will hang through Friday, December 30. A reception will be held Saturday, November 5, from 6:00pm to 9:00pm.
