Add Review/Comment
The HumanDocs Film Series, a social-justice documentary series that aims to create a more just, peaceful and inclusive university and city, will host this showing of Miss Representation.
This film by Jennifer Siebel Newsom delves into how women are judged more strongly on their youth, beauty and sexuality than on their capacity as leaders. The film interweaves the stories of teenage girls with interviews with women leaders such as Dr. Condoleezza Rice, Nancy Pelosi, Katie Couric, Gloria Steinem and Jane Fonda to challenge the limited portrayal of women in the mainstream media.
When Miss Representation appeared at the Sundance Film Festival, it was quickly acquired by Oprah Winfrey, who will premiere the film on her OWN network this month. The film has been profiled in press all over the country including Ms magazine, the Chicago Tribune, the Huffington Post, Fortune, the Los Angeles Examiner and the New York Times.
The screening will be followed by a panel discussion featuring Andrea Moody, coordinator of the Students Taking a Right Stand program at David Lipscomb Campus School, Lipscomb University English professor Kim Reed, and Lipscomb communication professor Aerial Ellis.
HumanDocs is in its third season of partnering with ITVS Community Cinema, Nashville Public Television and the Nashville Film Festival to provide Nashvillians a free, regular opportunity to see highly acclaimed documentaries making significant comment on our world today. Films previously shown by HumanDocs include the Oscar-nominated Burma VJ, the Oscar-winning Inside Job and the Oscar semi-finalist Garbage Dreams.
