As the fall turns to winter, we bring the films of the great director and Wisconsin native Nicholas Ray (1911-1979) with a particular focus on his work in the 1950s, his most productive decade. Fearlessly crossing genres from picture to picture, Ray’s work of this period expressed a common theme of humankind’s malcontent with his surroundings (particularly that of teenagers) emboldened by expressionist photography and often a tumultuous rise to a crashing resolve. A maverick long before the cheapening of the word, Nicolas Ray’s defiant (some say narcissistic) work ethic often pitted him against his studio heads yet produced some of the most electric work of the time.

    JOHNNY GUITAR (1954)
Arizona saloon-owner Vienna (Joan Crawford) is biding her time until the railroad comes in, bringing new customers with it. At odds with her and potential new settlers are local landowners, not the least of whom is rancher Emma Small (Mercedes McCambridge), and the law who is on her side. Hoping to keep an increasingly threatening Emma at bay, Vienna hires her ex-lover Johnny Guitar (Sterling Hayden), who unbeknownst to everyone else in town is a notorious gunslinger. Stocked thick with a superb cast of supporting players (not to mention heavy sexual symbolism), Ray’s “phony western” is one of Hollywood’s strangest, and a delirious high point in Ray’s idiosyncratic career. 1954, NR, 110min, 35mm
