Add Review/Comment
One-day event explores the science behind all forms of gaming, from videogames to board games to games from other countries. It takes a surprising amount of technology to shoot an angry bird at some green pigs, not to mention some basic physics knowledge to actually win. Adventure Science Center will uncover the science behind some of the most popular games available today and yesterday during its Game On! event Saturday, Dec. 3.
Representatives from Sony’s Playstation division will be on hand to talk about new technologies developing in the videogame world, specifically for the Playstation 3 system, including 3D gaming, game design and movement-based play.
Visitors to Game On! also will have the opportunity to compete in a videogame tournament hosted by The Score of Cool Springs. Participants may compete in either Super Smash Bros Brawl or FIFA 12. A limited number of slots are available. Advance registration is available online at www.adventuresci.com. Any remaining slots will be filled on a first come, first serve basis the morning of the event, with the first rounds beginning at 11:00am. Prizes will be awarded to the top competitors in multiple age categories.
Additional activities include:
A life-size version of Angry Birds encourages visitors to explore the physics involved in defeating the pigs.
A new look at classic school-yard games like Foursquare, jump rope, and more.
Classic board games and their unique way of teaching physics, math and logic.
A chance to travel around the world, discovering new games popular in other countries.
Throughout the day, visitors will be invited to track their friends and share their own progress in games through social media including Foursquare check-in points, Instagram photo opportunities and a crowd-sourced Tumblr blog using the hashtag #GameOnASC.
“In today’s world of computer-based games, science and technology play an immense role in our leisure time activities,” said Susan Duvenhage, CEO of Adventure Science Center. “What many don’t realize is that even the simplest childhood games often incorporate some form of science, such as physics. Games have been used for thousands of years to hone problem-solving skills, learn math and develop higher brain functions – all while having a fun time.”
Game On! is included with regular admission to Adventure Science Center, which is $12 for adults; $10 for children ages 2 to 12 and seniors 65+. Certified TN teachers (with school ID) are free. For more information about these and other exhibits, visit www.adventuresci.com.
