Enjoy an incredible night of live music at the Hard Rock Cafe's Reverb Room. Tonight's live music features Darren Zancan Band, Jason LeVasseur, and Sharif Iman.
Behind the heartbreaks and life altering moments, is a man, guitar in hand, strumming away on Chord E, soothing the stuffy air of a crowded venue with his harmonica, singing a song for the person who meant the most to him in life - his father.
Darren Zancan will tell you he grew up in a music-based household, despite being adopted, where his father fronted several bands on the guitar. But in the beginning, Darren found himself more of a writer and stage actor, dabbling in short stories and lyric writing. His love for music came alive during high school and became a main staple in Darren’s life. He performed in vocal competitions, winning several, which got him noticed. And he was soon asked to front the regional band 419.
After two years with 419, Darren chose to break away and pursue other opportunities, meeting Bryan Martin, a fellow musician, and an instant bond was formed. After placing in the top three of a collegiate battle of the bands, Darren and Bryan formed the band Zion. The two performed more than 50 shows over the next year, playing all over the Midwest, gaining regional magazine and newspaper attention.
Not long after Zion split, Darren moved to Kentucky, and there he formed the band Down Jupiter. While things with the band seemed to be going smoothly, Darren was about to face the most challenging point of his life - his father was diagnosed with stage four pancreatic cancer. The blow to Darren was heart wrenching, and so he turned to his guitar for comfort.
“Table for One” - the song written by Darren for his father was picked up for several national CDs, and Down Jupiter would go on to play more than 50 shows, all the while recording a demo.
During his father’s last months, he tackled another instrument - the harmonica. He began teaching himself how to play and successfully incorporated it into his music. But not long after, the band dissolved.
All the while, Darren’s father continued to deteriorate. No matter how often Darren turned to his music, there was no denying that his father’s illness was terminal and it claimed his life shortly after. Despite the turmoil, he knew for his own sake, and for his father’s, that their bond through music would last a lifetime. Darren made the promise to his father that he would carry out the musical dream they both desired.
With the promise he made to his father on his mind daily, Darren formed the Darren Zancan Band in 2010, displaying his passion, energy and drive for the world to see. Hoping that his music will reach others in a positive way, he continues to create music.
Darren formed the Darren Zancan Band during his senior year of college at Eastern Kentucky University, where he carried out a two-year tenure. He decided to return to college as part of the promise he made to his father, and he continued to fulfill his dreams as he was selected to give the commencement speech to his graduating class on May 7, 2011.
The Band began as a two-piece, including himself and drummer Benjamin Fabert. The two quickly began putting melodies together, and played their first show at Chicago’s Elbo Room September 25, 2010. Since then, the Band has added several members, beginning with Steven Krupa, keys; Derek Moore, bass; Mike Krupa, guitar; and Dan Hubert, mandolin.
And after hundreds of hours practicing, the Band will be wrapping up studio time at the end of the year, showcasing their first full-length album, “Masquerade Ball,” thanks to award-winning producer Gary Loizzo, who has been working with the group since summer 2010. The album will feature upbeat original tracks, as well as soft love melodies and ballads that reflect the toughest times in life.
