Lipscomb University’s HumanDocs Film Series, presented by the College of Arts and Sciences, will host a free public screening of Hot Coffee, on Nov. 30 at 8:30pm in Ward Hall.

Many Americans scoffed at the famous hot coffee lawsuit against McDonald's, laughing it off as another example of a litigation-obsessed society. Now, 15 years later, the film Hot Coffee asks why the case -- if so frivolous -- garnered so much attention and what the impacts of the case really were.

The 1994 McDonald’s hot coffee lawsuit, involving a woman who spilled McDonald’s coffee on herself in her car and suffered third-degree burns, is routinely cited as an example of how citizens have taken advantage of America’s legal system. But Hot Coffee, which premiered in June on HBO, questions whether such an interpretation of the case is fair. Hot Coffee reveals what really happened to Stella Liebeck, the Albuquerque woman who brought the lawsuit, while exploring how and why the case garnered so much media attention, who funded the effort and to what end. This film attempts to challenge the viewer’s thoughts on the civil justice system and access to the courts.
