Cheekwood is calling for submissions from artists, architects and designers for an outdoor exhibition titled Treehouses that is scheduled to be on display in the botanical garden in the summer of 2012. The exhibition will showcase seven all-new treehouses, each artfully designed to represent one of literature’s great works.

The treehouses will be chosen by a juried panel from designs submitted by area architects, landscape architects, and artists who let their imagination run wild. This exhibit will branch out from the treehouses we remember from our childhood to create seven imaginative and non-traditional treehouses that will explore innovation in architecture. The seven structures will be scattered throughout Cheekwood’s gorgeous gardens. Coordinating with our literature themed summer, these amazing structures will be inspired by great works of literature.

 

This exhibition will take place May 26 – September 3, 2012. Selected designers will receive a stipend of $10,000 and will be responsible for construction, installation, and removal of each structure. In addition, each designer will be included in a printed brochure, press releases, on the Cheekwood website, and on a sign located next to their creation.

Design submissions will be due January 9, 2012. Designers are asked to prepare a proposal including a digital rendering or presentation board that includes an artist rendering and a plan view showing scale, etc. Models are welcome but not required. Please include a general statement of what materials you plan to use and a general budget. Collaboration between individuals and businesses is encouraged.

The winners will be announced January 27, 2012. The exhibit is endorsed by AIA of Middle Tennessee, a chapter of the American Institute of Architects. Designers needing additional information should contact Leigh Anne Lomax at 353-6969 or lalomax@cheekwood.org.
