Adventure Science Center invites you to join us for a series of informal discussions on current issues in science. Whether tackling how science can solve global problems or help us to understand how the universe works, these gatherings are NOT lectures. They are an opportunity for you to share your opinions, ideas and thoughts with other science lovers and to meet local scientists in a fun, casual setting. So grab a cup of coffee (or other adult beverage) and let's chat!

The New Madrid Earthquakes Two Hundred Years Later: What Have We Learned About Earthquakes at the Center of Tectonic Plates?

In our second session of our three-month series on Forces of Nature, we welcome Geophysicist Dr. Beatrice Magnani, a research professor with the Center for Earthquake Research and Information (CERI) at the University of Memphis. Magnani and participants will discuss the 200th anniversary of the New Madrid Earthquakes, which hit the west Tennessee area in 1811-12 and considered to be up to 10 times as large as the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. Could it happen again? What have we done to prepare? What CAN we do to prepare? Come share your thoughts and opinions and have your questions answered. Good for all ages.

We are kicking off a three-month series on Forces of Nature. We'll begin in December by welcoming Tennessee State Geologist Ron Zurawski to discuss earthquakes. While we may not think of Tennessee as a hot zone for earthquakes, they do occur (as many on the East Coast recently learned!) in our part of the world. Join what is sure to be a fascinating cafe as we talk about fault lines, probability of "the big one" and how we might prepare for a whole lot of shakin' going on.

Afterward, the Science Center will offer an opportunity to view Forces of Nature in the Sudekum Planetarium ($4 ticket). The full-dome show takes you up close to volcanoes, hurricanes, earthquakes and tornadoes. You can catch a preview of the show by clicking here.
