The Excuses sound is reminiscent of the stripped-down guitar-driven sound of the late 70's and early 80's. The new wave/punk scene of that period had a lasting effect on the band. It was, after all, about the time the boys were learning how to play their instruments. Add to this, a worn out copy of Big Star's first record, some heavy poprock from Cheap Trick, the catchy guitar hooks of forgotten bands like The Producers and The Knack and you'll start to get an idea of where the band is coming from - not that it's simply a paean to the classic power-pop bands of the past. Skorik's gritty vocal delivery brings to mind an early Police-era Sting raised in the Midwest on Springsteen records. The songs as well don't stay within the confines of the standard pop "boy-girl" theme. Alcoholism, urban violence, materialism, beerruns (?) and dark obsessions all show up as topics within the material.
