Savage Gulf Day Loop Hike

Come for an easy hike and a nice introduction to the Savage Gulf State Natural area. This easy 4.2-mile hike will take you to the 30-ft Savage Falls and Rattlesnake Point Overlook. About 500 acres of Savage Gulf below Savage Falls is old-growth forest of hemlock, yellow poplar, oak, ash, beech, maple, and hickory. This trail is basically flat and is great for beginners.

When: Saturday, January 28th at 8:00am (group breakfast) or 10:45am (trailhead)
Where: Savage Ranger Station in South Cumberland State Recreation Area
Meet for Breakfast at Cracker Barrel at 8:00 AM or Meet at Savage Gulf Ranger Station at 10:45am

Trip Leader: Chuck Higgins and Carl Hoagey
Difficulty: This is an easy 4.2 mi loop, and is beginner friendly. The loop begins at the Savage Ranger Station in South Cumberland State Recreation Area and crosses a field and Boyd Branch (via a suspension bridge) before reaching the junction for the loop, located one mile into the hike. At mile 1.5, a spur trail leads hikers to Savage Falls Overlook. At 2 miles, the trail leads past Rattlesnake Point Overlook, which offers a stunning view of Savage Gulf. The trail follows an old railroad bed starting at 2.8 miles until it reaches the loop junction again at 3.2 miles. Then 1.0 mile back to the Ranger Station.

Children Policy: Children 10 years and up who can handle the mileage and terrain.
Dog Policy: Friendly dogs who have hiked before are allowed, but must be on a leash at all times.
Limit: This trip is limited to 15 people.
