    Monroe plays a much smaller role in this slice-of-life melodrama from the great German director Fritz Lang. At the center of CLASH BY NIGHT is Barbara Stanwyk as world-weary Mae Doyle, whose soured big city dreams have sent her back to a small fishing village home of her fisherman brother Joe and his welcoming girlfriend Peggy (Marilyn Monroe, in a comparatively smaller role), thereby attracting the attentions of an upbeat fisherman (Paul Douglas) and his best friend, a cynical local projectionist (Robert Ryan) whose tight lamp-lit quarters become the site of the final showdown.
