Bryant Gallery presents Baggage - Furniture, assemblages and photography by Bill Brimm.  The exhibit runs February 11 - March 4 with the Opening Reception February 11, 5:00pm-8:00pm.

"While browsing through an antique store a couple of years ago I purchased a vintage suitcase. At the time I wasn’t sure why I bought it but I liked the faux tweed texture and leather details. I was drawn to the scratches and worn edges from many years of travel. Much like the wrinkles and scars on our bodies there was a unique history unto itself. This functional box, a home away from home, had such style unlike the plastic and nylon luggage we carry now. Where had it been, what personal belongings had it contained and what stories could it tell if it could talk?

The suitcase laid around my studio for a month or so until it became an idea that its flat top would lend itself to a new function. With some steel tubing and a wooden architectural piece I had claimed a few years back a new piece of furniture was born. Since then I cannot pass up a good suitcase when I see one. As a result I have a body of work to be shown in Baggage.

I am fascinated by the infinite possibilities of found objects and how one item can be the catalyst for an entire piece. GI Joe accessories, birds' nests, wood boxes, wasps' nests and artists’ mannequins are among the countless items I have used in my creations.

Included in Baggage are sculptures/assemblages fabricated with treasures I have collected. The imagery of this work reflects societal woes incited by insatiable greed, self-indulgence and stupidity that man has carried through the ages.

Metaphorically speaking, baggage is the weight of our human experience that goes along for the ride. As individuals, as a country and as a planet we are by products of our emotional baggage. As we evolve hopefully we can learn some valuable lessons from it and move on with a lighter load.
