Fairy Tales, Monsters, and the Genetic Imagination exhibition explores the dark and mystical side of fairy tales through invented hybrid creatures and visual fables. The exhibition serves as the creative catalyst for this four-part workshop series which will explore and include the making of masks and film, taking participants on a journey into the world of Magical Realism.

Michele Lambert will guide participants in the creation of an iconic mask that will lead to the writing of an original fairy tale that can be told in one to three minutes. Under the tutelage of Michael Catalano, participants will experience all aspects of filmmaking as they turn their story into a short film. Masks created during the workshop series will be the driving force for the film script and the films will be made in the style of novelist Gabriel Garcia Marquez school of Magical Realism.

Each participant will leave the workshop series with the mask they constructed and will receive a DVD of their video to share with friends and family. The videos will also be publicly presented through an Artist’s Forum event with Michael and Michele on Thursday, June 7, at 6:30pm at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts.
