Eugene Curran Kelly was born 100 years ago on August 23, 1912, a Pittsburgh native of Irish descent. Enrolled in dance courses by his mother at an early age, Kelly initially rebelled, but is said to have gotten back into dance at age 15 as a good way to get girls. Educated in economics at first, Kelly dropped out of law school to pursue dance full time—first at his family’s studio, but ultimately in New York where he moved for work on Broadway. His leading role in a 1940 production of Rodgers and Hart’s Pal Joey resulted in the offers from Hollywood that would make him a full-fledged star by decade’s end.

    COVER GIRL

Chorus girl (Rita Hayworth) is given the opportunity to be a highly paid cover girl, but would remain faithful to her nightclub act if only her boyfriend/club owner (Gene Kelly) would ask her. COVER GIRL boasts music and lyrics by the classic team Jerome Kern and Ira Gershwin and a stunning Hayworth in red-headed Technicolor. Kelly had complete control over the making of this film, and many of his ideas contributed to its lasting success. He removed several of the soundstage walls so that he, Hayworth and Phil Silvers could dance along an entire street in one take. He also used trick photography to dance with his own reflection in the immortal sequence "alter-ego” solo.

This series would not be possible without the generous support of Nina and H.G. Webb.
