"Chesnut and Sage" will be an inspirational introduction to Magdalene/Thistle Farms, a nonprofit for women who have survived prostitution, trafficking and addiction. The theme will be about the American Chestnut tree and about growing sage. The American Chestnut tree was once majestic, dominating eastern and southern forests. During the last century a tragic blight killed 3 billion trees. Through nurturing and resilience, the tree is growing again and a tree is now being nurtured at Thistle Farms. Just outside of town, Thistle Farms is also growing a field of sage, an ancient herb used for centuries for renewal and purification. These two symbols will be explored through readings, music and a reflection from founder Becca Stevens. The event chair is Fiona Prine; landscape architect Tara Armistead is designing the event; music will feature John Prine; and poet Stephanie Pruitt is helping residents write about revival and renewal. The event is free and at the end of the evening, guests are given an opportunity to make pledges or a one-time donation. The Magdalene Fall Fundraiser is in its 10th year and the success of this evening is what has allowed Magdalene to continue to provide a sanctuary to women in the streets for the past decade.
