In 1998, The Women's Fund held its first fundraising event, The Power of the Purse Luncheon. The event and its accompanying Tribute Book are intended to celebrate, honor, and inspire the mothers and daughters, sisters and cousins, friends and mentors, and community leaders of Middle Tennessee for, among other things, their accomplishments, generosity, love and wisdom. Sherry Lansing is the 2008 speaker. Lansing is the founder and current chair of the Sherry Lansing Foundation, a philanthropic organization focusing on cancer research, health and education. Lansing has won many awards for her leadership in film and humanitarian activities, including an Oscar in 2007, and continues her work with numerous nonprofits and civic organizations. Lansing was the chair of the Motion Picture Group of Paramount Pictures from 1992 to 2005, where she oversaw the release of more than 200 films including Academy Award winners "Forrest Gump," "Braveheart," and highest grossing movie of all time, "Titanic." A pioneering studio executive, Lansing was the first woman in the film industry to oversee all aspects of a studio's motion picture production. The success of the event has contributed to the overwhelming growth of The Women's Fund and the availability of more grant dollars for non-profit programs benefiting women and girls. Since its inception in 1998, the The Power of the Purse Luncheon and Tribute Book for have raised over $1,000,000 for The Women's Fund.
