Prehistoric Indian cultures existed in Tennessee through four evolving periods, beginning about 15,000 years ago, peaking between 800 and 1650 A.D. with the Mississippian people, and ending with the ascendancy of such modern tribes as the Cherokee and Chickasaw. Artifacts from the Paleolithic, Archaic, Woodland, and Mississippian periods are on exhibit. The museum even has a display of bones from a mastodon that roamed Tennessee 10,000 years ago.

Spanish conquistadors were the first Europeans to reach Tennessee, followed by the French and English explorers, and then by the first white settlers. Armor and weapons from the Europeans and Daniel Boone's musket highlight this era. A frontier cabin, 200-year-old dugout canoe, a grist mill, and a Conestoga wagon all give testimony to life on the frontier. Handmade furniture, a woodworking shop, and a working printing press show the skill of early Tennessee craftspeople.

The Antebellum period of 1840 to 1860 was a time of prosperity and cultural development for many Tennesseans. (Antebellum is from the Latin words ante, before, and bellum, war. It is used to signify the period before the Civil War.) Cities and towns became trade centers, as railroads and steamboats drew people closer together. The increasing prosperity manifested itself in several ways. Artists, whether trained or self-taught, found a ready market for their skills as the rising middle and upper classes sought to have their portraits painted. Silversmiths, gunsmiths, tailors, and other craftsmen established themselves in cities and towns. Exhibits of Tennessee-made silver, firearms, and quilts attest to that prosperity. Another display on African American life points out that one-fourth of Tennessee's population were blacks who not only did not share in the state's prosperity but also lived as slaves unable to control their own lives.

By 1860 the issue of slavery had become a tinderbox; a moral, social and economic issue which slowly divided the northern and southern states. Tennessee found itself divided when the General Assembly voted to secede. Many people in East Tennessee supported the Union and even fought in the Union Army. Tennessee was the primary battlefield of the Civil War in the west, with more than 400 battles and skirmishes within its borders. Each of the major battles in Tennessee is highlighted with artifacts from the battlefield. The Tennessee State Museum's holdings of uniforms, battle flags and weapons are among the best in the nation.

Between 1870 and the 1920's, Tennessee experienced great changes fueled by the post-Civil War industrial revolution. Exhibits on women's suffrage, Prohibition, and the Tennessee Centennial Exposition illustrate the state's involvement in social issues of the times.

The Stones River Craft Association's Studio Tour is celebrating its 16th year in Murfreesboro and Rutherford County. On November 21 and 22, approximately 30 artists will be on hand to display and educate the public about their process and history of their individual craft while showcasing their unique artistic talent. The Studio Tour showcases local and Tennessee produced, professional works of art that display some of the finest craftsmanship in our region. Functional and decorative pieces in many forms for use indoors and out will be available and the processes for creating jewelry, pottery, sculpture, stained glass and wood will be among the work available at each of the participating studios. The Dickens of a Christmas event on Franklin's Historic Main Street brings the joy and charm of an old-fashioned Victorian Christmas recreated from the pages of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol and other Dickens' tales. More than 200 volunteers participate in the event as characters from Dickens' stories or street performers. Activities include:

• Dancers and street musicians perform are on the streets throughout the event. Violinists, hand bell choirs, harpists, carolers, pianists, even a water harmonica player all add to the entertaining street scene.
• Victorian treats abound, from authentic fish 'n' chips to turkey legs, plum puddings, roasted chestnuts and sugar plums.
• A holiday bazaar arts & crafts area encircles Franklin's charming Public Square, where horse drawn carriages allow visitors to see Historic Downtown Franklin at a slower pace. 

Dickens of a Christmas is free and open to the public, supported by Publix Supermarkets, Franklin Road Academy, and the City of Franklin and presented by the Heritage Foundation of Franklin & Williamson County and Downtown Franklin Association, which seeks to protect and preserve the architectural, geographic and cultural heritage of Franklin and Williamson County and to promote the ongoing economic revitalization of downtown Franklin in the context of historic preservation.

The best way to read Shakespeare’s plays is out loud and with friends! The Nashville Shakespeare Festival hosts this monthly gathering at the Nashville Public Library (Main Library) on the first Saturday of each month to read one of the works of William Shakespeare, beginning with the first play he wrote and ending with his last. No need to commit to the whole canon, and all voices, ages and dialects are welcome. Listeners are also encouraged! This month features The Merry Wives of Windsor.

During the months of November and December, Metro Parks Centennial Art Center Gallery features the popular Holiday Season Exhibition and Sale. Benefiting Arts in the Parks, a non profit organization, the exhibit features works by Metro Parks Cultural Arts staff and students.  

This year, exhibiting staff members include: painters/mixed media artists Harry Denson, Hazel King, Brenda McSurley, Barbara Rembert and Kathy Tupper. Also exhibiting are pottery and sculpture teachers Lena Lucas, Wanda McMahan, Tiffany Warner and Timothy Weber.

The Arts Center of Cannon County and the Cannon Cultural Museum are proud to announce the 2009/2010 exhibition, “From Necessity to Invention: Tools, Machinery and Culture” exploring how the development of culture is directly affected by tools and machines.

This exhibit looks at the advent of both hand implements and machinery on agriculture in Middle Tennessee, on the development of the white oak basketry culture and chair making tradition in Cannon County, and on the production of moonshine whiskey in the area. The exhibition will also examine the “Stump Jumper” tradition from Reel Foot Lake in the northwestern corner of the state.

The Cannon Cultural Museum’s second exhibition features artifacts from the Gertrude and Ben Caldwell Collection and the Cannon County Historical Society Collection and is sponsored by the Arts Center of Cannon County, the Cannon County Historical Society and Gertrude and Ben Caldwell.

A welcoming celebration will be held from 6:30pm - 8:30pm on July 9th and the staff, Board of Directors, and patrons of the Arts Center of Cannon County invite all community members to come out and experience Cannon County's the newest cultural attraction.

Historic Downtown Franklin, Tenn. celebrates St. Patrick's Day on Saturday, March 13 with Feile (pro: "FAY-LA") Franklin – a celtic festival on historic Main Street! Streets will be closed to traffic and filled with Irish music, dance, food and fun. It's a free street festival with a ticketed imported beer tasting in the Main Street area shops. The street will be filled with roasted potatoes, fried potatoes, turkey legs, fish and chips and all things Irish. At night, specialty and imported beers will be sampled at the shops. More than two dozen Irish bands and dance groups will be featured on two stages throughout the event.

All proceeds will go to Downtown Franklin Association for promotion and continued revitalization of the historic district, which is on the National Register of Historic Places and designated by the National Trust as a Great American Main Street.

Helpful Information: Main Street will be closed for the two blocks between the Public Square and Five Points that day. Ticket holders will check in at the intersection of 4th Avenue and Main Street to get their special tasting glasses, a map to the tasting sites, and a description of the beers and Irish whiskey to sample.

TSU's Space for New Media Inaugural Exhibition honors the intention and work of the Cause Collective. Along the Way is a 30' wide, 10' tall, Sundance "New Frontiers" video from the Cause Collective, a team of artists, designers and ethnographers who create innovative art in the public realm. Their projects explore and enliven public spaces by creating a dynamic conversation between issues, sites, and public audience.

Along the Way is a 20-minute video mosaic that includes over 1,500 videos taken by the artists featuring the people and places of Oakland, California and the surrounding Bay Area. This piece bears witness to a nine month journey that the artists undertook among the people of the Bay Area.

The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County is the short story that got Mark Twain’s reputation as a humorist hopping! In the story, “as told to Mark Twain,” an old man named Simon Wheeler relates a ridiculous tall tale about a miner and his pet frog. Featuring various puppetry styles and exciting original music, this adaptation by Wishing Chair Productions will delight all ages.

The entire city of Nashville will celebrate the literary heritage and humor of Mark Twain during Nashville’s Citywide Celebration Of Mark Twain, August 2009-May 2010. The inclusive and cross-discipline artistic celebration of this lively, provoking and distinctly American writer will include book club discussions, art exhibits, theater presentations, dance performances, marionette shows, and musical tributes as rich and as varied as Twain's writing.

Billy Contreras and Buddy Spicher have become one of Music in the Grand Lobby's most popular musical guests. Designed for 5-10 year olds, the Frist Center Kids Club offers exciting opportunities for children to discover, explore, and create art. Free membership includes a Kids Club card, rewards for participation, hands-on activities in the Martin ArtQuest Gallery, and monthly projects in the art studios.

Due to a limited number of space in each class, reservations are strongly suggested and can be made two weeks prior to each class. Walk-ups are welcome as long as space is available.

Society bears fruit, some of which has been gathered by gallery F in an exhibition of sculpture, installation, video, collage, and painting. The show playfully inquires into issues of identity, belonging, and gender in the context of the interplay of societal expectations and the idea of one's true self. The answers to these questions remain open. The artists' works present a spectrum from humorous to deeply contemplative. The exhibit runs through Jan. 9, 2010.

Artists in this exhbition include Patricia Earnhardt, Libby Rowe, Sara Estes, Daniel Lai, James Darr and Matt Christy.

Jointly sponsored by the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center and the Nashville Mayor's Advisory Committee for People with Disabilities, this annual exhibit features work in a variety of media by artists with a wide range of abilities/disabilities and ages. Since its inception in 1976, the Mayor's Advisory Committee has promoted public education and awareness, and advocated for persons with disabilities and their family members.

The exhibition is located at the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center Exhibit Area, Lobby 2nd Floor Vanderbilt Kennedy Center/MRL Building, 21st and Edgehill Avenues. Awards Celebration: The artists will be recognized at the 28th Annual Awards Celebration of the Mayor's Advisory Committee on Thursday, October 22, at 5:30pm at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts auditorium. This exhibit chronicles the creation of “The Plan of Nashville,” a community-based, 50-year vision of how the urban core of the city should look and work in the future. Created with the help of more than 800 Nashvillians and completed in 2004, the plan was conceived and orchestrated by the Nashville Civic Design Center, a non-profit organization committed to urban design and fostering public participation in the design process. The Plan of Nashville: Avenues to a Great City book was published by Vanderbilt University Press in 2005. The exhibit features more than 100 original drawings chronicling the city’s historic development and the plan’s vision for the future, as well as the work the NCDC has done in the past five years since the plan’s release. This is the first time these drawings have collectively appeared on display in Nashville.

Encouraging partnership between artists and the public, Art Makes Place is a year-long project featuring 7 artists who made 7 temporary community and performance-based artworks for public spaces in Nashville. Each project began with a lecture/workshop with Metro Nashville Public School students, continued with participation from Vanderbilt University, Frist Center for the Visual Arts, and the larger Nashville community, and resulted in a temporary artwork presented in public spaces throughout Nashville. The project culminates with this exhibition of artwork from the project. October 17, 2009-March 14, 2010 in the Art Gallery at Main Library.

ReLeafing Nashville Day is the Nashville Tree Foundation's fall planting, held every year on the Saturday before Thanksgiving. Volunteers across the county plant trees in public spaces and private yards. In partnership with Nashville Electric Service, the Tree Foundation has planted hundreds of trees since ReLeafing Day began in 2002. ReLeafing Day evolved out of Nashville Tree Foundation's highly successful, award-winning ReLeaf Nashville project that planted 6,757 shade trees from 1998 to 2001 to replace some of the 20,000 felled by tornadoes on April 16, 1998.

Tired of always watching? Come out for a day of flag football and take this opportunity to actually play! These pick up games are open to members and non-members of all ages. Come with friends or come alone, and bring a ball if it brings you good luck.

Here's the game plan. Teams are formed when there are enough individuals for a game. If you come late, no problem. You can take someone's spot on the field when they come off for a break. When the first game is over, teams break up and form new teams. All ability levels welcome. Wear dirty clothes! This event is canceled with rain or snow. Be sure to dress warm and comfortable. A collaboration between the Department of Art and Residence Life, this exhibit features photos of Belmont students with items that make the student feel strong. This project is part a Residence Life project that helps students identify personal strengths. The exhibit will be in Gallery 121 October 31 through December 15 and is free and open to the public.

Awakening Songs features new works by Evie Coates in The Theater Gallery at Ensworth High School. Evie Coates is an art teacher by day and a junk-diver and tinkerer by night. Inspired by time spent in the Western plains, her watercolors speak of the wild, timeworn beauty of that terrain and issue a sense of comfort and simplicity. Weathered boards, rusty hardware, old tin cans, vintage buttons and bits of wording from old hymnals are just a few of the recycled elements the artist employs in her work. Her sensibilities are decidedly vintage and light-hearted. Evie enjoys a hearty thunderstorm, some steel guitar and a good glass of Kentucky bourbon.

Nashville mixed media artist Jared Freihoefer shares with the community a love of text and books through The Magic Word. His new work incorporates collaged pages from donated books, mixed media figurative and portraiture imagery, and text from thoughts collected from the community.

Books serve as tangible proof of shared ideas. It is only through the sharing and propagation of these ideas that we are able to grow and mature as a community and as a society. The collection of stories presented in the artwork reflect the collection of stories being played out within our community. In the same way the concepts we read about transform with our interpretation of them, Jared will be literally transforming the books into new and innovative solutions. The Magic Word exhibit and installation at Blend Studio will create awareness for the need of preserving literacy and ideas shared through text. The community is invited to become directly involved in the creative process by donating books.  We encourage the public to contribute to the project and interact with the bookshelf by bringing books to the studio during regular hours, as well as the opening reception during the First Saturday Gallery Crawl on November 7.

The Concert Chorale of Nashville will present Handel's "Messiah" to benefit the Room in the Inn program on Sunday December 6, at St.Henry Catholic Church. Admission is free and for every person who attends the concert, "angels" will donate more than $10 to Room in the Inn, an interfaith organization that assesses the needs of the homeless with a unique vision that is different from government and for-profit corporations. Room In The Inn provides food and shelter for up to 225 people each night in over 150 area congregations from November 1 to March 31.

Cumberland Gallery heralds in the gift giving season with its signature Small Packages show of works by gallery, as well as invited artists. A Nashville favorite, this exhibition’s popularity has inspired many similar shows throughout the country.

Participating in this year’s show are returning favorites including Kurt Kemp (CA), Michael Greenspan (OR), Billy Renkl, Kell Black, Andy Saftel, Johan Hagaman, Ann Wells, Kit Reuther and Marilyn Murphy (TN) and many others. Invited artists include Craig Cully (NM), Leslie Tucker (NY), John Sayers (MN) and Kenna Moser (WA), to name but a few. Small Packages 15 is an eclectic exhibition featuring finely-crafted, culturally relevant sculpture, paintings, prints, photography and drawings, both representational and abstract.

This year the sizes of the works truly make them “Small Packages.” We have restricted the dimensions of the pieces with the majority of works in the 5 x 5” category. Prices start at $75.00 ensuring that there is something to appeal to everyone and every pocketbook. The gallery will be closed December 25 – January 1 for vacation.

The Rymer Gallery is pleased to announce a solo show for Emily Leonard opening Saturday, November 21, and closing Saturday, January 2. Miss Leonard’s paintings speak thoughtfully of our relationship with the natural world. Her practiced technique with oil is elemental in creating her spellbinding landscapes, with primary focus on the hauntingly mysterious way that light breaks or ends each day.Miss Leonard’s landscapes often appear abstract when viewed up close; however, at a distance, they come into focus with unparalleled luminosity. Her paintings communicate strong emotion and reaction to her environment with a contemporary style. Emily is a Tennessee native and a third-generation painter, but she has definitely developed her own voice in expressing her art.
