The best way to read Shakespeare’s plays is out loud and with friends! The Nashville Shakespeare Festival hosts this monthly gathering at the Nashville Public Library (Main Library) on the first Saturday of each month to read one of the works of William Shakespeare, beginning with the first play he wrote and ending with his last. No need to commit to the whole canon, and all voices, ages and dialects are welcome. Listeners are also encouraged! This month features The Merry Wives of Windsor.

Nashville Public Library hosts the Urban Libraries Council’s 2009 Partners for Success Conference. Part of the Urban Libraries Council (ULC) biennial conference series, the event reflects the ULC’s larger initiative to examine the emerging ways libraries contribute to the improvement of urban life. The conference is noted for its ability to convene a variety of urban activists, librarians, trustees, mayors and other city and county officials, and the rich discussion and research it generates. Past host cities have included Boston, Chicago and Cleveland.

For the first time, the general public as well as leaders and thinkers from across North America will be invited to the conference to discuss key issues on the civic agenda in communities across the nation. Sessions will focus on innovative regional efforts related to governance, housing, employment, health, environmental resources, transportation and education, the continuing and rapid evolution of information exchange and learning, and the various ways public libraries contribute to building and sustaining strong regional areas.

Experts from a variety of political, practitioner and philanthropic perspectives will take part in the conference, including Joe Cortwright of Impresa Consulting. Cortwright will help conferees understand their “City Vitals,” statistical measures of city performance in four key areas including talent, innovation, connections and distinctiveness, and how to use this measure to maximize successes and minimize weaknesses.

For more than 30 years the Urban Libraries Council (ULC) has worked to strengthen public libraries as an essential part of urban life. A membership organization of North America's premier public library systems and the corporations that serve them, ULC serves as a forum for sharing best practices resulting from targeted research, education and forecasting. ULC's programs are acclaimed for inspiring new organizational models that invigorate urban libraries and enrich the areas surrounding them. ULC is headquartered in Chicago.

Nashville mixed media artist Jared Freihoefer shares with the community a love of text and books through The Magic Word. His new work incorporates collaged pages from donated books, mixed media figurative and portraiture imagery, and text from thoughts collected from the community.

Books serve as tangible proof of shared ideas. It is only through the sharing and propagation of these ideas that we are able to grow and mature as a community and as a society. The collection of stories presented in the artwork reflect the collection of stories being played out within our community. In the same way the concepts we read about transform with our interpretation of them, Jared will be literally transforming the books into new and innovative solutions. The Magic Word exhibit and installation at Blend Studio will create awareness for the need of preserving literacy and ideas shared through text. The community is invited to become directly involved in the creative process by donating books. We encourage the public to contribute to the project and interact with the bookshelf by bringing books to the studio during regular hours, as well as the opening reception during the First Saturday Gallery Crawl on November 7.

Former Opryland theme park performer and National Vocabulary Coach of the Year Debbie Mathis Watts will sign her latest book at the Renaissance Center on Saturday, December 5. Wordabulous! -- Celebrating the 'Positive Power' of Words shows individuals how life can be improved, enjoyed and celebrated through the knowledge and appreciation of words. Described as a fun-filled guide to a better vocabulary, the book provides the author's insights on words, some "words of wisdom", and chapters arranged in a "word-a-week" configuration.

"The examples I have chosen to use in the book are strictly my own preference," said Watts, who was inspired to write Wordabulous! after being named the country's top vocabulary coach by the Game Show Network. "There is a larger world of words out there, and readers are encouraged to develop a vocabulary that will help make their own lives more successful, enjoyable, and in short, 'wordabulous'." Readers can improve their word usage by studying famous quotes by legendary writers such as William Shakespeare and Emily Dickinson, new words that are helping shape the 21st Century, the latest text messaging lingo, commonly misspelled words, misused words, and clever quizzes to test one's understanding of words.

A native of Dickson County, Watts serves as the literacy coach for teachers for Sumner County Schools. For more than five years, she inspired teenagers as an award-winning middle school teacher at Merrol Hyde Magnet School in Hendersonville, Tenn. She also taught at Dickson County High School for six years. Before that, she was a highly respected writer and producer of game shows for Reid-Land Productions and an acclaimed performer at Opryland theme park. She also performs regularly as a pianist/vocalist for the Loews Vanderbilt Hotel in Nashville. For more information or to order the book, call (615) 242-9857 or (888) 80-SHINE or send an e-mail to info@shinetimebooks.com or info@Wordabulous.com.
